What are some audio setup tips?

  • If possible, do not use the microphone built into the computer. The quality is not as high as the goal should be. Some external webcams have decent microphones built-in, so test the microphone you are planning on using before you need to record. The goal is to have a direct sound rather than sounding like the audio is from an individual sitting 10 feet away in a large room.
  • Ensure that the microphone is as close to your mouth as possible and away from any other surfaces. If the microphone is more than 12 to 16 inches away from you, the audio quality will start to deteriorate.
  • Ensure that the input settings on your capture software are set so that the audiometer is bouncing around the “half-way” mark when you are taking into it at a normal volume.
  • Test, test, test! Try recording and playing it back to make sure that you are receiving an adequate sound quality.
